Creative Commons

Creative Commons LiveBinder:

Wednesday Web #35
Over the past few weeks I’ve done a lot of work with Creative Commons. Through the Adobe Youth Voices program I’m working with 7 students to create a youth-generated media piece. Our piece uses video footage of the students, narration by them as well, and digital photos. Because the piece will be placed on Adobe’s website we needed to make sure that we either contact the author of each image, or search for “creative commons” material. Creative commons media is royalty free- anyone can use it.
Below are some of the sites that we’ve used.
  1. Soundsnap has over 100,000 sound effects and media clips available for download. There is a fee, but you are allowed to download 5 free clips per month (per email account).
  2. Flickr, an on-line storage site, has literally millions of photos. Beware; not all are royalty free. If you are looking for a specific type of image, be sure to type in “creative commons” + [your topic] to see a listing. With Flickr its always best to look in the tags as well.
  3. Also on Flickr is a photo collection from the Library of Congress (all royalty and copyright free)
  4. Another creative commons audio site
  5. Google also has an advanced search page that allows you to check a box that says to look for creative commons material only
  6. If you need copyright free images of wildlife, plants, space, and the environment
